Got your heart set on an outdoor wedding?

While an outdoor ceremony sounds like the perfect setting to capture breathtaking wedding photos, there are a few challenges that come with outdoor photography.

But all it takes is some careful consideration before your special day. And the photos of your wedding will be nothing short of spectacular.

Let’s start with the sun...

How to make the sun your best friend

First, and most importantly, is figuring out how to work with the sun.

Of course, sun direction and height will depend on the season. But not everyone will have a chance to check out their chosen location a full year in advance!

Think about whether your ceremony location will be in direct sunlight, and if your guests will face into the sun.

Also consider how much shade is available, especially if the weather could be hot.

In short, it’s best to aim for even lighting if you can.

If you can’t avoid direct sunlight altogether, then consider having your whole ceremony in the sun. 

Or, even better, all in the shade.

Not only will your guests be more comfortable in the shade, but your photos will look more consistent too. 

Getting your timeline right

No matter what time of year you’ve set your wedding, try to avoid planning a noon ceremony if possible.

Any photographer will tell you that the bright midday sun is the worst for taking great wedding photos.

Of course, if your outdoor location will be in full shade during your ceremony, then your timeline can be more flexible. 

And don't forget to make sure there’ll be enough light left to shoot the more formal photos before sunset!

Making the most of the golden hour

The golden hour is the stretch of time just after sunrise or the period leading into the sunset.

And it is, without a doubt, the best time to capture breathtaking photos of your wedding.

Thanks to the wonders of physics, the sunlight at these times of the day is softer and warmer. 

Which means a more flattering light for your photoshoot. And spectacular wedding photos that’ll look amazing framed on your wall.

What to do if it rains?

No one wants to think about rain on their wedding day.

But when it comes to the weather, having a solid plan B if it rains will ensure a much more relaxing experience for everyone involved.

Umbrellas are an obvious choice. And, depending on the size of your guest list, you could also consider a portable shelter option.

Does a nasty weather forecast look unavoidable?

Then moving inside or hiring a marquee might be your only options.

Either way, your photographer is a professional. They’ll have experience working in all conditions… even torrential rain!

Choosing the best backdrop for your photos

Last of all, but equally important, is thinking about what the backdrop of your ceremony will be.
An outdoor ceremony will offer countless options for breathtaking scenes. But make sure you take the time to check out what will be behind you in the photos.

Will there be other people around?

Could there be vehicles that ruin a great shot?

Or will you be on a beach with a fast-moving tide?
